In recognition of National Doctor’s Day (March 30) as well as in
honor of advanced care practitioners, Cortland Regional Medical Center
will celebrate the dedication and contributions of two caregivers in the
Cortland community at its annual physician recognition event on Thursday,
The physician recognition awards are presented to members of the medical
staff who are dedicated to excellence in patient care, have given significant
service to Cortland Regional Medical Center and the community, and who
have demonstrated continued academic effort. This year’s event will
recognize Physician of the Year, Hasan Zakariyya, M.D. and Advanced Practice
Professional of the Year, Donna Gardner, FNP-C.
Dr. Zakariyya, a member of Cortland Regional’s hospitalist team since
2010, works as a nocturnist specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology.
He divides his time between his own endocrinology practice, CRMC and a
larger healthcare facility. Compared to the larger hospital, Cortland
Regional offers him, “a smaller, friendlier environment where I
get to meet the community and work closely with my team.” Dr. Zakariyya
also enjoys the clinical challenges available to him, noting that “with
a smaller, dedicated team, I have the opportunity for more hands-on work
and problem solving.”
Surprised and honored to receive this award, Dr. Zakariyya said, “Working
at night you don’t expect to be recognized. You just do your work,
you’re a bit out of sight, out of mind. I am very honored to be
recognized by my colleagues.”
For more than 46 years, Advanced Practitioners have played an invaluable
role on the medical teams at Cortland Regional. Honoree Donna Gardner,
FNP-C, from US Acute Care Solutions, has served the Cortland community
for over 25 years. For the past ten years she has worked in Cortland Regional’s
emergency department and beginning in 2008, has divided her time between
the ED and the hospitalist team. Gardner is “truly humbled to have
received this award and honor, given all of the incredible talent at Cortland
Born and raised in Lisle, Donna has maintained a deep connection to her
roots and her community through the care of her patients. Gardner enjoys
her work at CRMC because her patients are the members of her community
and her team, “my family. While it might be a little cliché,
I’m a local girl who belongs in the local hospital.”
