As the countdown to labor begins for first-time moms, a lot of thoughts, anxieties, and worries can sometimes creep into your head. As you begin your journey into motherhood, here are three tips we’d like to share to help ease you into your new role as a mom.
Begin Planning Your Home Life
If you’re a first-time mother counting down the weeks, now is the time to start prepping around the house! The safest way to ensure you and your newborn get the best night’s sleep is to have the crib set up and ready to go. Though it can be tempting to allow your baby to sleep with you, infants should always be sleeping in their cribs, on their backs, without any toys or blankets.
When it comes to a car seat — installation is critical! At Cortland Regional, we have Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can adequately help you get ready to bring your bundle of joy home. Bring your car seat with you, and we’d be happy to help teach you the proper installation guidelines.
Lean on Your Support Systems
No matter how many books you read, there will always be questions, so keep a list! Ask anything that comes to mind before leaving the hospital, and don’t feel bad about reaching out when you’re back home. From concerns about your recovery to lactation support— there are no silly questions. We want to provide you with the tools to succeed!
Beyond our help — use your support system at home, too! If family and friends offer to help around the house, let them!! After all, you are in recovery.
Don’t Forget Self Care
Getting adjusted to your home life with your new bundle of joy is a lot to handle, and it can be quiet easy to forget to take care of yourself. Remember to not put too much pressure on yourself because your health goes hand-in-hand with your baby’s health. If you start noticing signs of the “baby blues,” such as anxiety or mood swings, talk to your provider. The critical thing to remember is that you’re in recovery, too.
Having your first born is one of the most memorable experiences you can have, so you’ll want to do it in high-quality care. Cortland Regional Medical Center is your best choice for obstetric and maternity care!
