The birth of a child is one of the most important and joyful events in
a woman’s life. With the opening of the new Regional Medical Practice
Midwives (RMP Midwives), an affiliate of Cortland Regional Medical Center,
women in the Cortland area now have a new option to consider.
CRMC is pleased to welcome Certified Nurse Midwives Mary Borra and April
Ward to the Regional Medical Practice family. Certified by the American
College of Nurse-Midwives and licensed by the state of New York, both
Borra and Ward have advanced training and many years of combined experience
in prenatal, well-women, family planning, and gynecology care. They will
closely collaborate with physicians from Cortland Regional Medical Center,
particularly the OB/GYN department, primary care, family medicine, and
Family Health Network to serve the healthcare needs of women in the Cortland
When asked about her motivation to be a midwife, Borra said, “In
the late 1970s when I was working as a labor nurse, women didn't have
a lot of choices when it came to their prenatal care and childbirth experience.
I wanted to support and empower women to have a more active role in their
birth. I felt the midwifery model best embodied this vision. The desire
to continue to assist women with their health care needs in my home community
has motivated me to join RMP Midwife service. At RMP Midwives, April and
I have the opportunity to expand their healthcare beyond traditional medical
services to be true partners in helping families grow healthy and strong.”
Ward points out that there are many important decisions to be made about
pregnancy that extend beyond the common questions on how to manage pain.
“We counsel patients on nutrition which includes good choices before
and during pregnancy, understanding symptoms, breastfeeding support, and
stress management during pregnancy and postpartum,” she explained.
“Our presence throughout a woman’s experience is very important.
We are dedicated to being right there in the room providing physical and
emotional support the entire time.”
Both women are excited to lend their midwifery skills and expertise to
the already outstanding maternity team at Cortland Regional. Borra says,
“April and I are pleased and proud to join the Cortland Regional
medical staff and work alongside their exceptional physicians and nurses
to provide service and support to women.” The overall quality of
CRMC’s maternity department was recently recognized by Excellus
BlueCross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction® Center+ in the area of
maternity care. Learn more at
