By demonstrating compliance with its national standards for health care
quality andsafety, the Joint Commission recently awarded Cortland Regional
Medical Center a three-yearaccreditation and its Gold Seal of Approval.
"We sought accreditation to comply with federal regulations, but
more importantly, because we want to demonstrate our commitment to patient
safety and quality care," said DeniseMironti, Senior Vice President
of Patient Care Services.
"We view obtaining Joint Commissionaccreditation as part of our continuous
improvementprocess toward achieving excellence."Joint Commission
standards address the organization's level of performance in keyfunctional
areas, such as patient and medication safety, infection control, and provision
of patientcare. The standards focus not only on an organization's
ability to provide safe, high quality care, but on its actual performance
as well. If an organization does the right things and does them well, there
is a strong likelihood that its patients willexperience good outcomes.
Mironti noted that Joint Commission surveyors conducted a rigorous four
day survey atthe medical center this past September meticulouslyreviewing
records, conducting physician andprofessional staff interviews, observing
patients'care, and inspecting the building andequipment.
According to the Joint Commission, its surveyors evaluate and accredit
nearly 15,000healthcare organizations and programs in the UnitedStates.
An independent, not-for-profitorganization, the Joint Commission is the
nation'spredominant standards setting and accreditingbody in healthcare. The
Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, a distinctive seal that
isproudly displayed at accredited organizations and certified programs,
is recognized nationwideas a symbol of quality that reflects a commitment
to meeting certain performance standards.
Brian Mitteer, President/CEO, emphasized that accreditation is only attainable
throughcooperation and communication among the healthcareteam members.
